Modern Art + Design 628

Welcome to Bukowski's Modern Art + Design

Thanks to the fact that Sweden during the 1950s, '60s and '70s had several gallery owners who exhibited world-class international art, there are still many Swedish collections with significant international art today, which makes Stockholm an essential marketplace for this segment.

When Lucio Fontana was exhibited in Sweden in the 1960s and '70s, not many people were interested in his work, and today his paintings sell for millions. For this auction, Bukowskis has been entrusted with selling no less than six artworks by Fontana in various techniques, including a cosmic blue painting with three cuts, gouache on paper in intense yellow and a glazed sculpture in ceramic.

Fontana's various creative phases and techniques are represented: the painting with cut (so-called tagli) is from the 60s, the yellow drawing with punched holes (so-called buchi) is from the 50s and the glazed sculpture is from the 40s. It is very unusual to sell so many works by Fontana with this high quality at the same time, says Lena Rydén, Specialist in modern art, Bukowskis.

Bukowskis also present a significant work by Serge Poliakoff, one of the foremost representatives of the development of abstract painting. The catalogue number, "Composition abstraite", was made in 1967 and is an exquisite example of Poliakoff's painting technique from a significant period in his production. Additional highlights in the art department for international art are works by Hans Hartung, Max Ernst, Sohrab Sepehri, Gerard Sekoto, Karel Appel, Victor Vasarely and Lynn Chadwick.

The department for furniture and design includes many sought-after and exceptional objects where a couple of armchairs by architect Carl Bergsten stand out with an estimate of SEK 250,000 - 300,000 / piece. Architect and furniture designer Carl Bergsten's significance for the development of modern architecture and furniture design in Sweden during the beginning of the 20th century cannot be overestimated. These armchairs are offered together with vintage furniture classics from Hans J. Wegner, Finn Juhl, Bruno Mathsson and Josef Frank.

I am very fond of a couple of armchairs by Gunnar Asplund for Skandia Teatern (Nordiska Kompaniet's workshops) around 1924. These are unique in their context, and it is unusual with furniture by Asplund on the auction market, says Eva Seeman, Head Specialist Design and 20th-21st C Works of Art, Bukowskis.

The now internationally acclaimed Axel Einar Hjorth is also represented with his many various pine furniture. The design department can also present a wonderful collection of Venini glasses. See also a rich selection of Rut Bryk's fantastic ceramics, a decorative wall sculpture by Birger Kaipiainen, as well as magnificent rugs by, e.g. Märta Måås-Fjetterström and Barbro Nilsson.
