17th century full vellum, label to spine gilt-lettered “Giovio / Vite”, marbled endleaves and edges. Contemporary marginalia (cropped), leaves 97-8 cut in margin also affecting a few words of text on each side (no loss), first few leaves with waterstain outermost along margin. Bookplate of Franz Pollack, Parnau.
Giovio’s biographies of Popes Leo X (1475-1521), Adrian VI (1459-1523) and Cardinal Pompeo Colonna (1479-1532) were originally published in 1549 (in Latin). This translation into Italian is by Lodovico Domenichi.
