From the collection of a Scandinavian noble man, who had a long diplomatic career starting in the early 1920s.
Born in Tokyo in 1885, Mio Goseki, otherwise known as Tora no Goseki, studied the Shijo style of painting under Ohashi Suiseki (1865-1945). He spent several years in China and Korea exploring the physiognomy of tigers. Following his return to Japan he focussed on tiger paintings. He exhibited twice at the Bunten and gained 3rd prize at the Tokyo Industrial Exhibition with his painting entitled Moko (ferocious tiger).
