Juvenalis’ & Persius’ Satires, 1684, in a School prize binding

Juvenalis’ & Persius’ Satires, 1684, in a School prize binding

Decimus Junius Juvenalis & Aulus Persius Flaccus:

Satyrae cum veteris scholastae & variorum commentariis. Editio nova.

Amsterdam, Henricus Westenius, 1684. 19 x 12 cms. [48] + 525 + [93] + 112 + [18] pp. including engraved frontispiece; + [ii] pp. (a printed prize leaf from the Latin school at Dordrecht, bound at the beginning).

Contemporary full vellum gilt, covers with large gilt device of the Latin School at Dordrecht with motto ”Minerva Dordracena”, slight wear and soiling, ties missing, corner loss to front flyleaf where an old ownership inscription has been removed, tear to corner of page 171 with loss of a few letters of text. School prize copy with and extra printed presentation leaf with the name of the recipient Cornelius Cruyskercken added in ink (autumn 1696) and signed by six members of faculty including the principal, Johannes Georgius Metzler.

Proveniens

With three old ownership inscriptions, one dated 1724, one by Robert Roper St. Johns College, Cambridge, 1738 and a later one dated 1830 ([?] Wood). Bookplates of Thomas Hay and Nils Fries. Clipping from a bookseller’s catalogue (Thulins, 1949) tipped in on rear flyleaf together with Nils Fries’ purchase notation in pencil. Robert Roper is probably the Robert Roper of Trimdon, Durham, who matriculated at St. Johns college in Cambridge in 1738 at age 17.
