Batenin Porcelain Factory (1812-1839) Founded by Sergei Batenin during the very year of Napoleon's ill-fated march into Russia, the Batenin Porcelain Factory in St. Petersburg flourished brilliantly but briefly. Its high quality porcelain is characterized by popular scenes of the imperial capital and its environs, portraits on tea services and vases, and luxurious floral decoration on gilded grounds, like this example. For these robust floral designs, the factory received a gold medal at the St. Petersburg Industrial Exhibition in 1829. While appealing largely to the local gentry, Batenin services were also made for the Imperial court and aristocracy. The factory closed after a fire in 1839.
