BOOK, Rare Photo Album - Carl XVI Gustav & Silvia (King & Queen of Sweden)

Photo album from a State visit in West Germany 1979: Besuch I. I. M. M. König Carl XVI Gustaf und Königin Silvia von Schweden in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland vom 20. bis 27 März 1979. [=printed title page].

[Germany, 1979]. Oblong folio (24,5 x 30 cm). (23) leaves with 59 mounted original photos in sizes 23 x 17 and 17 x 12 cm respectively.

Light brown blind tooled polished leather (by Helmuth Halbach), in blank dust jacket and housed in a custom made vellum backed cloth box. Photos mounted on thick paper with tissue guards. Most of the pictures are slightly discoloured due to aging, taking a reddish tone. One letter from Auswärtiges Amt and a printed card from bookbinder loosely inserted. As can be seen from the accompanying letter, this album was prepared as a gift for the Swedish ambassador Sven Backlund by the German Foreign Office to commemorate the state visit of the King and Queen of Sweden in March 1979. The photos, by unknown photographers, cover a broad spectra of activities from the visit. The first pictures show the King and Queen together with German president Walter Scheel, followed by pictures from dinners, parades and rallies, a visit to a coal mine, the inspection of a Porsche race car, a boat trip and folk dancing, among other things. Neither the letter nor the album itself state how many copies were made of this luxurious album. One might assume that copies were made for the King and Queen, and for president Scheel, but apart from them, the number must have been very limited.
