Pohjoismainen muotoilu on ollut globaali ilmiö vuosikymmenien ajan. Designsuuntaus syntyi 1900-luvun alkupuolella, kun ruotsalainen uusklassismi, joka myös tunnetaan nimellä Swedish Grace, syntyi ja teki läpimurron Pariisin näyttelyssä vuonna 1925.

Pohjoismainen muotoilu jatkoi kukoistustaan Pariisin 1937 ja New Yorkin 1939 maailmannäyttelyiden jälkeen, joissa ruotsalaiset, suomalaiset ja tanskalaiset designesineet saivat kansainvälistä tunnustusta ja mainetta. Termi Swedish Modern, joka tarkoittaa modernismin pehmeämpää versiota, otettiin käyttöön ja suomalainen muotoilu vahvisti läsnäoloaan Yhdysvaltain markkinoilla Alvar Aallon paviljongin kautta. Menestys maailmannäyttelyissä aloitti pohjoismaisen muotoilun kulta-ajan, joka kesti 1970-luvulle saakka.

Näiden aikakausien keskiössä oli syvä kunnioitus toimivuudelle, yksinkertaisuudelle ja laadulle. Poistamalla kaiken tarpeettoman, syntyi ajattomia esineitä, jotka tuntuvat tänään yhtä moderneilta kuin vuosikymmeniä sitten.
