Treasures from a Småland Vicarage F551

A Collection of Swedish Cultural Heritage

The vicarages are and have been an important part of Swedish cultural heritage, and several of them are today privately owned. Each vicar naturally left their mark on the residence, and the items in this themed auction testify to a vicarage home with an interest in art, antiques, and curiosities. The auction items come from Långaryd's Vicarage and include an exciting collection of art and antiques, mainly of Danish origin.

“Hardly any class of Swedish farms can compare with the vicarages in terms of reputation for old-fashioned, solid homeliness.”

Quote by the Swedish ethnologist Gustaf Upmark the Younger, curator at the Nordic Museum, in connection with the 1917 inventory of the country's vicarages.

The vicarages were a very important "cultural institution" in earlier times, as the vicar's residence was a central gathering place in the farming community. The vicar and his family were often people with a high level of literacy who could impart education, knowledge, and news, and the vicarage thus functioned as a "cultural centre" long before such institutions were available to the public.
