Important Winter Sale presents Bruno Liljefors

Bukowskis presents twelve works by Bruno Liljefors at the upcoming auction, Important Winter Sale – the live auction featuring the best by the best in art, antiques, Asian works of art, and jewellery.

Bruno Liljefors (1860–1939) was a Swedish artist renowned as one of the foremost depicters of animals and nature. By thorough studies of animals in their natural habitat, he developed a style that combined naturalistic precision with a keen sense of dramatic light and movement. Liljefors was influenced by plein air painting and the asymmetrical compositions of Japanese woodcuts, which lent his works a unique dynamism. His early paintings marked the beginning of a lifelong pursuit to capture the vibrancy and wildness of nature with a poetic touch.

This auction features works that reflect Liljefors' artistic evolution, from the highly detailed naturalism of the 1880s, influenced by Japanese art, to the evocative tonalism of the 1890s, the monumental painting of the turn of the century, the early 20th-century exploration of nature as protective camouflage, and the mature works of the 1930s where outlines fade and details are subordinated to the whole.

Interest in Bruno Liljefors' art has experienced a renaissance. His paintings bring to life the dream of an unspoiled nature, at a time when climate change and human encroachment have disrupted ecosystems. Liljefors' art has gained new relevance and significance, resonating in many ways more profoundly with contemporary audiences than it did in his own time.

In the autumn of 2024, Petit Palais in Paris, in collaboration with Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, opened an exhibition featuring over 100 works by Liljefors. For the first time, French audiences are introduced to “Bruno Liljefors – La Suède sauvage” – The Wild Sweden.
