Bukowskis is delighted to present an anniversary exhibition featuring Madeleine Pyk, one of Sweden's most beloved contemporary artists, in celebration of her 90th birthday. This exhibition marks her largest to date.
'Don't forget to remember' comprises nearly 120 previously unseen works, many painted as recently as 2023, showcasing the vitality of Pyk's artistic oeuvre. Among the subjects are Pyk's familiar tigers, as well as new elements, including a robot that, through AI, visits Van Gogh's studio.
"The idea behind the exhibition is for us to pause and remind ourselves of what is important. To us. Everything moves so fast now. Far too fast. The animals. It seems like no one cares about them. Everything that is disappearing. Butterflies. You can see how the animals line up in my paintings, as if asking what we're doing. All my paintings are questions," comments Madeleine Pyk.
Her debut exhibition took place at the legendary Petra at Lilla Paviljongen in Stockholm in 1956 – the same year Madeleine completed her studies at Konstfackskolan. She later pursued studies at Konstakademien (1963–1967) and held exhibitions throughout Sweden; from Kulturen in Lund to Galleri Blå in Umeå. She has also held solo exhibitions internationally in Amsterdam, Botswana, Hamburg, Nice, Paris, and Rome, and her works are represented in collections at Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Stockholms Stads samlingar, Norrköpings Museum, Västerås Museum, Västerås Stads samlingar, Umeå Museum, and Östersunds Museum.
Labeling Madeleine Pyk is difficult; she operates across a wide spectrum of creativity. Apart from painting and graphic work, she also writes and photographs. She has authored several books and produced films.
Among audiences, she is adored like few others. Kristina Lugn once remarked that there's a kitchen, a bathroom, and a Madeleine Pyk painting in every Swedish home. It beautifully encapsulates how beloved Madeleine Pyk truly is.
