Highlights from the art department at Modern Art + Design
12 lots exceeding one million SEK and strong demand when the art was auctioned at Modern Art + Design.
Following successful auctions for contemporary art and design, Bukowskis continues its live season with Modern Art + Design – Scandinavia's leading auction for modern art and design.
On the second day of the auction, the focus shifted to the art department. Highlights from the day included pioneering works by Swedish artists such as Sigrid Hjertén, Isaac Grünewald, and Gösta Adrian-Nilsson, as well as internationally significant names like Picasso, Julio Le Parc, and Henry Moore. Scandinavian names such as Tove Jansson, Jens Ferdinand Willumsen, and Thorvald Hellesen were also represented.
The art continued to show strong results, and the auction as a whole resulted in a total of 13 lots exceeding one million SEK and several new world records.
High demand and new records for Swedish modernists
Isaac Grünewald's "Woman in Blue Dress (Sigrid Hjertén)", depicting his wife Sigrid Hjertén became the auction's highest lot with a final price of 3 562 500 SEK. The auction also included several important works by Sigrid Hjertén herself, including "Blondinen på terrassen" and "Södra landet" which both sold to high final prices. The painting "Blondinen på terrassen sold for a final price of 3 125 000 SEK.
Other significant Swedish works included "kl ½ 12" by Gösta Adrian-Nilsson (GAN), with a final price of 1 870 000 SEK, and several early paintings by Halmstadgruppen, among them Axel Olson's "Kvinnofigur i grått och svart" which sold at a final price just above 2 million SEK – a new world record for a work by Olson.
Tove Jansson exceeds expectations
The popular artist Tove Jansson was represented with several works, two of which rocketed in price and landed well over a million SEK. The piece Study for 'Källskärstavlan' achieved a final price of SEK 1.9 million.
Estonian artist Endel Köks set a new world record with the painting 'Couple at a Restaurant,' which sold four times the low estimate. The Norwegian artist Thorvald Hellesen also attracted intense bidding with the painting 'Composition.' A highligh among the Danish names was Jens Ferdinand Willumsen; his work "Klagende kvinde med barn" sold for a final price of 1 611 000 SEK.
International Highlights
The international art highlights included the sculpture "Mother & child: fragment" by Henry Moore, which sold above 1 million SEK. "Pigeon" by Pablo Picasso and "Telek" by Victor Vasarely also sold at high final prices. One of the auction's most exiting lots was "Serie 14 No:7" by Julio Le Parc, which, after intensive telephone bidding, sold over five times its low estimate and ended at a final price of 2 million SEK.
Picasso, Miró and Chagall
The print department attracted bidders from all around the world and offered an exciting range of prints by prominent such as Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró and Marc Chagall. Highlights included "Tête de jeune femme" and "Buste de Femme au corsage blanc" by Picasso, which achieved the highest price within the department.
