Systembolaget's beverages auctions and Bukowskis present the 50th joint auction.
Jubilee - 50th joint auction
Bukowskis and Systembolaget’s Wine & Spirits Auctions have reached the 50th auction since the collaboration began in 2017. The April auction includes a traditional selection where champagne, red Bordeaux and Scotch whisky are the three largest categories among the auction’s 1,850 lots.
“Systembolaget’s Wine & Spirits Auctions has been a very appreciated collaboration since Bukowskis took over in 2017. That we now get to present our 50th auction to an audience in Sweden and internationally is very exciting”, says Louise Arén, CEO of Bukowskis.
The collaboration plays a vital role in Sweden as a marketplace for sought-after beverages on the secondary market. In connection with the success, awareness and interest have increased in recent years.
“Systembolaget is good at customer interaction, which we are proud of. This is proven through our great result in the Customer Satisfaction Index (NKI). It’s important for us how we meet the customer, we should be where our customers are, and we see an increased interest in Wine & Spirits auctions. We are looking forward to the following 50 auctions to come”, says Ann Carlsson Meyer, CEO of Systembolaget.

In connection with the anniversary, we have spoken to Johan Blanche, valuation manager for Systembolaget’s Wine & Spirits Auctions, who tells us more about the success of the collaboration and the role of beverage auctions in the secondary market.
What reasons do you see for wanting to buy and sell via beverage auctions?
There can be several reasons for selling. For example, it can be about wine and spirits that have been inherited or that you simply want to realize the value in money. For many auction buyers, the drinks auction provides an opportunity to find older vintages or unique beverages and producers that cannot be found in any other way.
How has the development looked in recent years?
In 2017, drink auctions had a turnover of SEK 42 million. Since then the auctions have increased by approximately 20 per cent per year up to SEK 97.5 million in 2022. The numbers speak for themselves and show that awareness and interest in beverage auctions have increased among Swedes and internationally. In fact, 25% of the value in 2022 was represented by foreign buyers.
What role does Systembolaget’s Wine & Spirits Auctions play in the secondary market?
The state has given Systembolaget the exclusive right to sell alcohol in Sweden to limit availability. Here, the beverages auctions play an important role when, together with Bukowskis, we can offer a marketplace in Sweden for sought-after drinks on the secondary market.
What trends can we see in the secondary market? Are there any categories that stand out?
Among the categories that stand out on the Swedish auction market, the large proportion of the categories Champagne, Italian red wines and Scotch whiskey is noticeable. An increase in the value of red Burgundy is also notable, where prices on the Swedish market are now approaching international levels.
