Silver and gold necklace with old-cut diamonds, 19th century.
It is certainly fantastic to be able to pass on jewellery that has been in Martin Aronowitsch's possession. The Aronowitsch family owned Bukowskis for over fifty years, and it is now quite rare for delicate diamond necklaces from the 19th century to come onto the market. The auction also includes a ring with a diamond purchased in the 1980s from the legendary diamond dealer Ragnar Aschberg, who has close family ties to the Aronowitsch family.
The panther motif appeared in Cartier's repertoire just over a century ago and has been a recurring theme in jewellery from the legendary French jeweller ever since, with most heavyweight trendsetters, from Elisabeth Taylor to Jay-Z, wearing the iconic cat. This winter's auction features several luxury pieces from the venerable firm, including three pieces of panther jewellery.
Van Cleef & Arpels Necklace "Alhambra" in 18K gold
In the 1960s, many jewellers chose to revamp their offerings to capture the interest of a new generation of women who were revolting against old values and habits. Van Cleef & Arpels introduced the now iconic Alhambra necklace in 1968, which became an instant hit and was soon seen around the necks of radical but always chic women in Paris and other cities. Today, the Alhambra collection is experiencing a renaissance with a partially new audience and is often seen on artists like Cardi B and other superstars.
