The specialist's choice – Johan Jinnerot lists art favourites

Specialists choice Johan Jinnerot

We have spoken with Johan Jinnerot, Specialist Art and Old master paintings, who talks about the selection at this autumn's Important Winter Sale. He also takes the opportunity to list some of his favourite objects among the substantial amount of Old master at this fall's auction.

What can we look forward to in this autumn's Important Winter Sale auction?

– The department for Old master at this Important Winter Sale is unusually rich with many interesting works. The Old Master segment, which stretches from around the beginning of the 19th century and backward, is always exciting to work with. It requires a lot of research in the literature and surveys, especially for international names, to identify the artist and to date them correctly. It is a gratifying process, even if it can be tricky at times, where you are constantly developing and deepening your knowledge.

Feel free to look through our web catalogue and do not hesitate to stop by for a viewing. You can also email or call me, and we will find a time that suits you. Welcome!

Johan Gustaf Sandberg ”Midsommardans på Säfstaholm 1825”.

This painting is intriguing in several aspects. The provenance is the Gustaf Trolle-Bonde (1773-1855) "Den blinde excellensens" collections at Säfstaholm, Södermanland. Gustaf Trolle-Bonde had one of Sweden's finest art collections and was close friends with many of the great artists of the time, who periodically lived at Säfstaholm, including Johan Gustaf Sandberg. This painting, "Midsommardans på Säfstaholm" has never been on the market, since Gustaf Trolle-Bonde it has stayed within the family by descent. . This type of depiction of folk life, as in the auction's painting, became fashionable at the beginning of the 19th century. It was the first time in history when common people were depicted in this realistic way. Johan Gustaf Sandberg came to be of great importance for the artistic development at the time and influenced the later Düsseldorf school as well as the group called "konstnärsförbundarna" led by Carl Larsson, Anders Zorn and Bruno Liljefors.

Pehr Hilleström, "Spåscen"

Pehr Hilleström is considered to be the first real genre painter and painter focusing on depicting contemporary life in Sweden. He depicts the people of the Gustavian era in work, pleasure and celebration. All social classes are represented in the paintings, from the elegant, high-class households to the simple kitchen regions. Hilleström was not interested in any psychological interpretation but instead let the portrayed people express themselves with gestures and mimes to emphasize the anecdotal content of the image. For me, the work "Spåscen" really represents the best in Hilleström's artistic production and shows how incredibly skilled he was at both painting fabrics and working with strong contrasts of light and shadow lighting effects. The inspiration from Chardin is clear. "Spåscen" was included in the extensive Hilleström exhibition at Liljevalchs in Stockholm in 1929.

Alexander Roslin, Four portraits on Important Winter Sale

This auction includes no less than four portraits by Alexander Roslin. Roslin, the son of a doctor in Malmö, achieved enormous success internationally and in Sweden during his lifetime. When he died in 1793 at his home in the Louvre in Paris, he was a member of the French Academy of Arts and had been assisted by none other than Boucher in portraying Madame de Pompadour. Three of the auction's portraits are French. Catalogue Numbers. 619 and 620, which originally came from a French collection, are a pair and depict "Arthur and Antoinette Agathe Montaudoüin de Launay", a very successful merchant family. It was, above all, Roslin's fantastic portraits that brought him success, which is easy to understand when you look at the auction's paintings.
