A new world record for an artwork by Isaac Grünewald at Modern Art + Design
The masterpiece "Kungsträdgården, i solgasset" was sold at the auction Modern Art + Design for SEK 8,697,500.
Day two at Bukowskis' Modern Art + Design resulted in new world records and several million entries for Swedish and international masterpieces. This spring, Bukowskis has sold art, design, and watches for a total of SEK 158 million, strengthening Bukowskis' position as Scandinavia’s leading auction house.
– It is fantastic to once again, 21 years later, be part of placing a new record for one of the most significant masterpieces by Isaac Grünewald. It’s a magnificent painting from a pioneering time, both for the artist and for art itself. The painting has everything today’s collectors are looking for, the motif, the colours and the provenance. Many bidders participated far through the bidding. The painting was worth the audience’s applause! says Carl Barkman, Head Specialist Fine Art and Antiques.
› Waldemar Lorentzon's painting ”Edelweiss” sold for SEK 2 150 000
Waldemar Lorentzon’s rare paintings from the second half of the 1920s are a high point in his career as an artist. The work in the auction was given as a wedding present in 1929 and has been in the same family’s ownership ever since. The painting has never previously been sold at auction.
– Waldemar Lorentzon continues to be appreciated by our audience, as seen in the extraordinary final prices for both "Edelweiss" and "The Happy Walk". Another personal favourite was the Danish surrealist Elsa Thoresen, whose work achieved a final price of SEK 1,830,000. Thoresen is an artist who deservedly has received more attention in recent years, says Lena Rydén, Head of art, Specialist Modern Art.

The international department offered an undiscovered work by Mondrian, a magnificent work by Poliakoff, a purist painting by Amadée Ozenfant, an excellent Venice motif by Albert Marquet and a surprising final prize by the Philippine artist Fernando Cueto Amorsolo. Interesting works that attracted bidders globally at internationally high levels.
– The prints department at Bukowskis continues to grow, and tonight’s world record for ”Carmen” by Marc Chagall shows that Bukowskis reaches collectors around the world, says Marcus Kinge, Specialist Prints.
