Josef Frank began covering cabinets during his years in Wien, in the early 1930s working with Haus & Garten. He would go on to decorate them with different materials, but at this time it was with textiles.

In Sweden, the year 1937, Frank drew the first cabinet covered with floral posters from the flora of Palmstruch (later flora of Lindman). He came to produce several versions with textiles, leather and as this one, the most rare type – covered with maps. In the exhibition catalogue I Nationalmusei: "Josef Frank 20 years in Svenskt Tenn" from 1952 there is a similar object, cabinet 2132, covered with a map of London. The version shown here, where the cabinet is separated in different fields, is very rare.

It is fantastic that we get to sell yet another one of these unusual cabinets this spring. The auction also includes other highlights, such as a rare armchair by Björn Trägårdh for Firma Svenskt Tenn, along with a number of exciting and decorative pewter objects from pioneers like Estrid Ericson and Anna Petrus.

› The cabinet is in mahogany, covered with George Peltier’s map of Paris and marked with a plaque in leather, ”PLAN DE PARIS A VOL D'OISEAU G PELTIER”.

George Peltier drew this detailed map of Paris, based on how the city looked like during the 1920s. Peltier worked on the map for twenty years. It's said that it took him 30 000 working hours of research and execution. Every little street is depicted and friends of Paris can find the most famous landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, the Bastille and the train stations. Nine different editions were published between 1920 and 1985.

The cabinet will be sold at Modern Art + Design May 17 – 18.
