Contemporary Art & Design – Auction 25 October

Irving Penn ”Two New Guinea Young Women With Feathers...”, Jonas Bohlin's "Sto" chair and Denise Grünsteins, ”21 Maj”, are all to be sold at Bukowskis Contemporary Art & Design, 25 October.

featuring gems

Contemporary Art & Design is the first of this autumn’s auctions at Bukowskis, and it features real gems dating from the 1960s right through to the present day. Richard Pettibone’s iconic version of Roy Lichtenstein’s preferred motif is one of these treasures. Together with Andy Warhol’s legendary portraits of Ingrid Bergman and Mick Jagger, it will represent the 1970s and 1980s. Karin Mamma Andersson’s painting “Childhood” typifies in turn one of Sweden’s most popular twenty-first century artists.

Bukowskis is also able to offer some wonderful photography that demonstrates the breadth of work in this field. Items include everything from classic gelatin silver prints by Tuija Lindström to luxury car interiors by American photographer Luis Gispert. The crowning glory is a section featuring exceptional photographs by international master Irving Penn.

“Contemporary at Bukowskis is the only auction to be dedicated to contemporary art in Sweden. It is incredibly inspiring to be able to work with some of the most relevant artworks of the day. With my background in galleries, I am particularly excited by the opportunity to present this autumn’s Contemporary auction because it is so diverse in terms of content,” says Louise Wrede, a specialist in contemporary art.

“Irving Penn’s images are world-class and of a truly exceptional quality. The subjects too are in a league of their own. Penn was always able to draw a personality out of his subjects, whether it was Ingmar Bergman or a cigarette end,” says Karin Aringer, a specialist in photography and contemporary art.

A magnificent and very representative sculpture by the ever relevant Eva Hild is typical of the auction’s section for contemporary works of art and is expected to have a considerable impact internationally as well. Bukowskis has selected as highlights of post-war design well-preserved pieces by internationally renowned designers, including Alvar Aalto, Poul Kjaerholm and Jonas Bohlin.

“The first hammer auction of the autumn offers an irresistible collection of vintage pieces by classic Danish designers. These include, of course, Hans J. Wegner, who is one of my favourite designers,” says Eva Seeman, the specialist in charge of design and modern works of art.
