Kerstin Hedeby-Pawlo

Kerstin Hedeby-Pawlo was born in 1926 and studied at The Royal Swedish Academy of Arts in Stockholm 1948-53. Since 1949 she has participated as costume designer and stage set designer in more than thirty productions in collaboration with, amongst
many others, Ingmar Bergman. Kerstin Hedeby-Pawlo has over the years worked at The Malmö city theatre, The Royal Opera in Stockholm, The Opera in Helsinki, The Royal Theatre in Copenhagen and The Swedish Royal National Theatre in Stockholm. During
Ingmar Bergmans production of "The Misanthrope" at Malmö city theatre's main stage in 1957 Kerstin Hedeby-Pawlo's contribution proved vital, which was duly noted by the critics. Kerstin Hedeby-Pawlo also designed the costumes for Ingmar Bergman's
production of "The Rake's Progress" at The Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm in 1961. When Ingmar Bergman returned to "The Misanthrope" in his production for the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen in 1973 he decided to once again team up with Kerstin
Hedeby-Pawlo whose set design for the earlier production in Malmö had become legendary.

"The Misanthrope" was written by Molière in 1666 and tells the story of Alceste who always insists on telling the truth, even when the truth is damaging himself or his friends. This Modus operandi turns out to be a problem for the protagonist, not
only in his love life but also in his dealings with the long arm of the law. The famous play is a comedy of errors that satirizes the hypocrisies of the French aristocratic society. Ingmar Bergman did three productions of the play: Malmö city
theatre's main stage in 1957, The Royal Theatre in Copenhagen in 1973 and The Swedish Royal National Theatre's main stage in 1995 when the play drew huge crowds to the theatre.
