In the themed auction A Classical Selection, we present works by artists such as Helmer Osslund, Gustaf Fjaestad, Carl Trägårdh, and Esther Kjerner. The auction highlights the breadth and creativity found in classical art. The final decades of the 19th century were a time of radical development in art across Europe. At the conservative art academies in Sweden, history painting was still the highest regarded genre, but an increasing number of young talents sought a freer approach to painting and therefore went abroad, mainly to France. Not least, female artists found much better opportunities in Paris than at home. The art they encountered there was the new plein air painting, also known as outdoor painting. Thanks to new techniques with oil paints in tubes, the new generation gradually abandoned the studio to paint entire compositions outdoors. They set up their easels in forests, meadows, or on paths, creating their works and studying the light and movements of nature with their brushes.
Welcome to explore the classical works in this themed auction and place bids on your favourites.
Consignment is now open for our upcoming live auction, Important Spring Sale, on 11–13 June.
