Scandinavian Modern F606

Bukowskis presents an exclusive selection of Scandinavian design from the 1930s-1960s. Danish, Swedish and Finnish design has inspired people all over the world and shaped the interior design of our homes for almost a century. With early modernism and functionalism as a springboard, the art industry of the Nordic countries flourished at the international world exhibitions in Paris in 1937 and in New York in 1939. Scandinavian Modern became an international phenomenon that was characterized by blond woods, organic shapes and harmonious color choices. The innovative design combined with craftsmanship created timeless classics where form and function were united without compromising on comfort or beauty.

The themed auction presents a curated selection of sought-after furniture design by Axel Einar Hjorth, Hans J. Wegner, and Otto Schulz. Bruno Mathsson is represented with "Arbetsstolen," here with an example made in 1968, as well as the classic drop-leaf table "Maria flap" in teak. Explore the selection of several elegant cabinets in various types of wood, ranging from light Scandinavian birch by Alvar Aalto, intricate marquetry in the cabinet "Stockholm" by Erik Mattsson, to 1950s teak with Yngve Ekström's "Bangkok." Also in focus is a teak bowl by Finn Juhl, a small collection of stoneware by Arne Bang, and lighting by Paavo Tynell. Feel free to explore the entire auction.

Consignments are ongoing for our upcoming live auction Modern Art & Design, 20–21 May.
