Carl Oscar Borg – Depicter of the American West F582

This themed auction presents 24 works by Carl Oscar Borg, all sourced from an international private collection. Borg, born in Sweden in 1879 but active in the USA, became an admired artist in both North America and Europe. He is known for his masterful depictions of the vast landscapes of the American West and the unique environments of Indigenous communities. As he himself expressed it: "The desert, my desert, the land of red earth, the sunburnt plains, with its low blue mountains. The common name is 'the painted desert.' Here are more colors than you would find in any novice’s paintbox."

His art encompasses everything from grand landscape paintings to detailed graphic work, uniting technical skill with a deep reverence for nature. Borg was a member of the prestigious National Academy of Design, the National Academy of Arts, the Société Internationale des Beaux Arts in Paris, and the Salmagundi Club. He was also a prominent art director in Hollywood and taught at the California Art Institute and the Santa Barbara School of the Arts. Borg passed away in 1947, and, according to his last wish, his ashes were scattered over the Grand Canyon.
