Previously unknown source material on the education and upbringing of Karl XV and his brothers

Previously unknown source material on the education and upbringing of Karl XV and his brothers

Collection comprising c. 150 betrothal letters from 1837-1840 by the historian, politician, professor of history, member of the Academy, and Minister for Ecclesiastical Affairs, Fredrik Ferdinand Carlson (1811-1887) to his first wife, Beata von Post (1813-1841).

F. F. Carlson was a tutor for the crown princes Karl (XV), Gustav, and Oskar (II) from 1837—46, and it is primarily about this that the letters have been able to provide interesting and previously unknown information. The letter collection is mentioned as source material for Per Sandin's dissertation "A Royal House in its Time. The Meeting of the Bernadotte Dynasty with Civil Society c:a 1810-1860" (2011), in the bibliography, page 304. The use of the letters is indicated by numerous references to Carlson in the dissertation's index of persons: 25, 178, 200, 234, 237-242, 246, 249, 253-55, 257-8, 261, 262, 266-7, 277, 302.

"Through fortunate circumstances, during the research process, I also gained access to an interesting and for research previously completely unknown privately owned source material with information about Crown Prince Karl (XV)'s and his brothers' upbringing and education. The material consists of about 150 letters that the then associate professor of history, later councilor, among other titles, F. F. Carlson wrote to his then fiancée, later wife, Beate Charlotte von Post during the years 1837-1840, when he served as the tutor for the crown princes. The letters convey a personally colored depiction of the princes' educational journey. They also offer interesting general interior views from the crown prince family in 'holiday and parish'" (the dissertation, page 25).

A copy of the dissertation is included.
