Matthias van Arkel

Matthias van Arkel is a Swedish artist who studied painting at Konstfack from 1986 to 1991 and at the Royal Institute of Art from 1991 to 1993. Van Arkel explores innovative materials in his artistry, and after experimenting with oil paintings, he transitioned to working with silicone rubber in the early 2000s. The work process in van Arkel's art production involves first coloring the material and then shaping it through rolling and processing in various variations. The finished work is finally cured in an oven, using specially built molds. Thus, the artwork does not require any traditional support such as canvas, glass, or wall to hold together, and it can take on different forms, such as a painting, a solid cube, or something else. Matthias van Arkel is represented in several private collections in the USA, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, and Scandinavia, as well as in public art institutions such as Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Sweden, Statens konstråd, Stockholm, Sweden,Stockholm stads konstråd, Stockholm, Sweden, SOKO Art Collection, Helsinki, Finland, and the National Library of France, Paris, France.
