Tom Böttiger (1956–2022) was an enthusiastic art collector, renowned for his curiosity and passion for discovering emerging artists. On October 5, 2023, a significant part of his collection was auctioned with great success at Bukowskis. In the catalogue, his friends described his intense art collecting habits, where, at a pace comparable to grocery shopping, he acquired paintings, photographs, and sculptures. His purchasing decisions were fast, and Tom Böttiger firmly believed that if one's gut feeling was positive, it was best to act immediately.
In recent years, particularly after 2019 when Tom Böttiger first reduced his collection, his primary focus shifted towards photography and sculpture. The theme of the auction, "Tom Böttiger Collection - Photographs," encompasses approximately 80 photographs, primarily by Swedish photographers. Many of these images convey a melancholic tone, reflecting both the photographer's and collector's state of mind. The collection includes works from established photographers such as Martin Bogren, David Hurn, and Anna Clarén, as well as several relatively unknown names to the Swedish auction market. Tom Böttiger lived by the principle of capturing the moment, and within art, the camera is considered one of the foremost tools for this purpose. This may be why he came to appreciate the photographic expression.
