Russian Silver

Russian silver has a specific tradition through form and quality - typical are the contrasts that are found in the works of art trough different techniques such as silver gilt surfaces decorated with Niello or Cloisonné. Niello refers to the blackness in the decoration produced from blending copper, silver, led and sulfur. The mixture is then pored into an engraved pattern. Cloisonné is more of a colurful technique where one is adding the pattern on to the surface, making room for different colored enamel. The more colors used the better skilled maker. Silver workers were not expensive in Russia at the time which gave the opportunity to give the objects an extra fine finish. Please find your way to a bit of Russian history and tradition through the artistic silver objects in our theme action.
