He studied sculpture at Le Grande Chaumiere in Paris and architecture at Yale University. In 1963, Saarinen designed President Jefferson's memorial in St. Louis, called the "Gateway arch". Saarinen drew inspiration from nature and its sculptural and organic shapes.
