Italy and the truffle region of Piedmont offer up red wines from the neighbouring communes of Barolo and Barbaresco, with vintages ranging from 1958 to 2014. From Spain there are both classic and modern wines from regions including Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Priorat. There are a number of mature wines from across the Atlantic too, specifically from Napa Valley and producers such as Beaulieu, Cuvaison, Heitz and Mondavi.
The largest category in the auction, Bordeaux, has attracted a lot of attention because of two unique magnums: Château La Mission Haut-Brion from 1945 and the end of WWII – one of the big wines from one of the 20th century’s legendary Bordeaux vintages. Burgundies are represented by, among other names, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche, with six different vintages: from 1966 to 2015. Autumnal wines from the Rhône Valley include a wine that is as rare as it is unusual – Chapoutier’s Barbe Rac Cuvée Numérotée, produced from a blend of vintages and released in 1977.
Lovers of sweet wines will not be disappointed either. From Portugal we have port houses such as Taylor’s with vintages including 1945 and 1948, as well as a rare magnum from a big year for port, 1977. Classic Sauternes also stand out with Château d’Yquem in vintages from 1937 to 2005.
This time around five Swedish distilleries are represented in the whisky segment of the auction. Taking their lead from the pioneering Mackmyra distillery are the Hven, Gotland and Smögen distilleries, as well as the short-lived Grythyttan Whisky. We also have lots from a number of coveted distilleries in Scotland: Port Ellen, Springbank, St Magdalene and The Macallan, to name but a few. From the latter comes the rarely seen Exceptional Single Cask from 1981 and the 51-year-old Select Reserve 1948. Last but not least is a Japanese whisky that is a real ace from the Ichiro Card Series: Ace of Clubs, aged in casks of Japanese Mizunara oak for 59 months and one of Akuto Ichiro’s personal favourites.
