Muut tiedot

Galleri Riis exhibited Andreas Eriksson's Meander paintings in Stockholm from April 18 to May 16, 2015. In the text for the exhibition, they described Eriksson's paintings which, like Per Kirkeby's brushstrokes, evoke geological layers and the influence of water on topography:
“'A meander is generally a bend in a meandering stream or river'. This is the description on Wikipedia. Andreas Eriksson's new paintings have much in common with this natural phenomenon. The flat plains where the meander forms are also present in Eriksson's work, both geographically and as a metaphor for the canvas.
Meanderbilder is an exhibition of paintings. Eriksson has worked with these paintings, like a meander cutting through surfaces and layers of pigment. Starting nowhere and ending nowhere, an erosion occurs over the entire surface. In some of the works, a brushstroke is abruptly interrupted, in others the underlying color reappears as a vein further into the picture, is painted over and then reappears. In nature, the material that seeps through water and settles to the bottom is called sediment. Eriksson's paintings almost always contain a hidden surface, a layer that is as significant as the immediately visible ones.”
Andreas Eriksson's career has been on a steep upward trajectory since he was admitted to the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm at the age of eighteen. His big breakthrough came when he represented Sweden at the Venice Biennale in 2011. Eriksson works in a range of disciplines including painting, photography, textiles and bronze. Today Andreas Eriksson is represented by Stephen Friedman Gallery in London and Galleri Susanne Ottesen in Copenhagen.

Lisää taiteilijasta Andreas Eriksson

Andreas Eriksson is a Swedish artist, born in 1975 in Lidköping. Eriksson studied at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm between 1993 and 1998, and works with various techniques in his artistic practice, including painting, photography, sculpture, textiles, and graphics.
A recurring theme in Andreas Eriksson's works is the presence of nature; the light over meadows, forests, and mountains is shaped into structures, blocks of color, and organic formations. Often, a motif emerges that can be interpreted as landscapes, shifting between figurative and abstract spatialities. However, Eriksson suggests that the rich and almost sculptural works can just as easily be seen as something other than interpretations of nature; as internal, diffuse landscapes where the viewer can linger.
After a period of work in Berlin, Andreas Eriksson now resides in Medelplana on Kinnekulle in Västergötland. In 2011, he represented Sweden at the Venice Biennale with Fia Backström. Eriksson is also represented at institutions such as the Gothenburg Museum of Art, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Nasher and David J. Haemseigger Collection of Contemporary Art in the USA, the Sara Hilden Art Museum in Finland, and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark. He became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in 2014.
