A gilt bronze figure of Amithaba Buddha, Ming dynasty (1368-1644)

The Amitabha Buddha is cast with prominent urna above a slightly aquiline nose, eyes serenely downcast, pendulous earlobes framing a full face beneath a coiffure of tight curls and ushnisha, the robe overhanging both shoulders carefully chased with floral designs along the hem and his undergarment held in place by a bow-tied belt below the chest marked with a svastika. He sits in dhyanasana with his hands in dhyana mudra. The figure still with traces of pigment in the face. Height 16,5 cm.

Chips, tarnished, wear.

Alkuperä - Provenienssi

From the Collection of Emil Hultmark (1872-1943). Emil Hultmark was one of the co-founders of the ‘Kinaklubben’ (China Club) in Stockholm in the 1920's with Carl Kempe (1884-1967) and the Crown Prince Gustav Adolf. He is a well known collector and his beautiful home and summer house is well documented in the magazine 'Svenska Hem i ord och bild' in the 1930's, which provide us with a fascinating window into this golden age of European collecting.
