A composer, musician and artist – Gösta Nystroem practiced all three fields with great success. He grew up in an intellectual home and were introduced to art and music by his father in childhood days. Nystroem studied music during 1913-14 in Stockholm and then traveled to Copenhagen to study music and paint between 1916-20. Between 1920-32 he lived in Paris. As an artist he was self-taught but where highly influenced by Henri Matisse. During his years in Paris Nystroem socialized and were influenced by fellow Swedish artists such as Gösta Adrian Nilsson (GAN), Isaac Grünewald, Nils von Dardel, Erik Grate and Sigrid Hjertén. Both in his music and painting Nystroem’s expression were cubistic and expressionistic. Today Nystroem is mostly renowned as a musician since he after having some exhibitions in Copenhagen, Odense and Stockholm stopped painting in the 1920s to almost only compose music. His artistic oeuvre is therefore limited and highly sought after by collectors who wants to own a work by this important artist.
