During the Franco era, intellectuals in Spain met in secret groups. One such meeting place was the shop of the hatmaker Joan Prat in Barcelona. The shop also contained a sought-after library with avantgarde literature, prohibited at the time. Antoni Tapies was a member of this group and as an homage to Joan Prat, the crossed-out hat is a recurring symbolic motif in many of his works.
