Mathsson was born and active in Gävle. He called himself a wood carver. He started a shop "Gävleslöjd" (Gävle carpentry) to which he made mostly everyday items.
Mathsson's work was discovered in the early 1950s by a musean who compared Mathsson's work with contemporary sculptors like Henry Moore and Jean Arp.
For the exhbitions in which he was participating he made unique sculptures such as these.
Mathsson is represented in most Swedish museums and participated in a larger number of exhibitions internationally in the 1950s and 60s.
