A Sinotibetan gilt bronze figure of Vajrapani, possibly 17/18th Century.

Standing pratyalidhasana, holding a vajra in his right hand raised, fierce attitude, angry face with bulging eyes, a third eye on the forehead, open mouth showing fangs, eyebrows and bushy beards, the hair erect behind a crown five pointed heads with skulls, a plump body covered with jewels inlaid with turquoise and a snake as a necklace, the hips dressed in a tiger skin whose head is visible on its right flank and held by a belt of heads. Height 21 cm.

An identical golden bronze representing Vajrapani is exhibited at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts under the reference 91.487 (height: 21.5 cm)

Endowed with great strength and protector of the Buddha, he has the appearance of a ferocious protective deity who keeps the demons at a distance and helps the meditator to overcome his negative thoughts. In this function, it is represented in the pose of the warrior, one leg folded and the other stretched, holding a vajra at the end of his arm and in the other hand a lasso to capture the demons. He wears a crown of skulls, a necklace of snakes, a loincloth of tiger skin.
