Palm stayed in Italy between 1840 and 1851. On his return to Sweden he continued to paint pictures with Italian subjects based on oilsketches or drawings executed in Italy. Palm visited Sicily between late September 1849 and the beginning of January 1850 (Lindgren, op. cit., pp. 106-108). During his travels through Sicily he visited Palermo twice, in late November and late December.
