New world record for Josef Frank ’Apskåpet’ - sold for MSEK 4 625 000

The first day of the Modern Art + Design live auction offered sensational final prices for iconic design pieces.

Bukowskis set a new world record when Josef Frank’s highly-anticipated cabinet, ”Apskåpet (The Monkey Cabinet)”, sold for a final price of SEK 4.625,000 – the highest price for a Swedish 20th–century furniture ever sold at auction.

– This autumn’s design auction is Bukowskis’ most significant and comprehensive, with several prestigious collections. There was particularly great interest in Josef Frank, which was reflected in the exceptional sale of the unique “Monkey Cabinet”. We are incredibly pleased about a new world record for the designer and Bukowskis tonight, says Camilla Behrer, Head of Design / Head of Modern Decorative Art and Design.

Another world record at the auction was Hans J. Wegner’s iconic easy chair ”Papa Bear” when it hammered for a final price of 350 000 SEK.

Excellent interest in ’Hildur Hansson Collection’ - A passion for Svenskt Tenn

Bukowskis’ design department included several sought-after collections, such as the personal collection of Svenskt Tenn objects, gathered by Estrid Ericson’s close friend Hildur Hansson. The unique mirror signed Uno Åhrén, and Anna Petrus achieved a final price of 462 500 SEK, another fine example of one of the many unusual design items in the auction.

– It’s always especially gratifying to be trusted to sell collections that attract top collectors in Sweden and internationally with personal and unique content. We also saw a great interest in the most sought-after designers; Axel Einar Hjorth, Josef Frank, Axel Salto, and Nils Fougstedt, all of whom achieved excellent final prices, says Eva Seeman, Chief Specialist Modern and Contemporary Decorative art and design.

The designer Harald Notini was also one the shining stars of the evening in the collection ”Arvid Böhlmark’s Lampfabrik”, which was auctioned with great success with many international bidders.

– It’s fantastic to see a designer like Harald Notini get the attention and the final prices he deserves, an undiscovered treasure in Swedish design, says Jonatan Jahn, Head Specialist Contemporary and Modern Design.

The most expensive Swedish carpet at auction

Barbro Nilsson’s magnificent carpet,” Bankrabatten grön”, designed in 1966 and signed AB MMF BN, achieved an outstanding final price of 624 000 SEK and became the most expensive Swedish carpet sold at auction this year. The result shows that Swedish carpets continue to be sought after internationally.

– It’s great to see how we again demonstrate that Bukowskis’ range of carpets and textiles is in demand internationally, as shown by the excellent final prices at today’s auction, says Christopher Stålhandske, Head Specialist Carpets, textiles and Islamic works of art.

The results show that Bukowskis, together with Bonhams Network, reaches an international audience and has a selection that attracts buyers and sellers of the highest caliber.

As part of the Bonhams network, Bukowskis reach a global market with millions of customers through a combination of our digital platforms and auction houses in Stockholm, Helsinki, Copenhagen, London, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong and Sydney.
