Important Spring Sale – Lisa Gartz lists favourites in the upcoming auction

Specialist's Choice Lisa Gartz

We have spoken with Lisa Gartz, Specialist Sculpture and Older Painting, who talks about the offer at this year's Important Spring Sale before the auction on 2-4 June. At the same time, she takes the opportunity to highlight some of her personal favourites.

What can we look forward to at this season's Important Spring Sale?
– We are pleased to present a fine international department of older paintings with everything from beautiful still lifes, landscapes and exciting allegories to portraits and miniatures. Among the sculptures, we are proud to present some of Carl Mille's magnificent works; Paul is dazzled, the Skating Princess and Poseidon, to name a few. Among the older Swedish art are pearls by von Breda, Åkerström, Ehrenstrahl, Pasch and more. A personal favourite is Jens Juel's portrait of Johan Tobias Sergel.

What should you think about if you want to start collecting older paintings or sculpture?
– Visit the auction viewing! Feel free to ask us who work here about access, quality or themes in the art, and we will tell you with pleasure, and you can get a tour. If you are going to start collecting, you will see a large mixed selection of art in all price ranges where we have selected the best. Here you get the chance to see sculptures and paintings up close, to turn and twist with us.

What makes older paintings and sculpture interesting to you?
– Partly how the experience of a work of art, for example, a sculpture, changes with its placement in the room. It can come to life depending on how light and shadow hit the surface. When it comes to older paintings, the wings of history have always captivated me, and art tells so much about the time it was created. The paintings' motifs also contain so many fascinating stories and life stories. The symbols in, for example, a still life are essential, and the stories of antiquity are imaginative.

Feel free to look through the catalogue online and don't hesitate to contact us for questions! You can also email or call me if you have any questions.

Gudmar Olovson Dusk

Gudmar Olovson's tender and beautiful sculptures appeal to people all over the world. I think several of his great works are so nicely placed, for example, in Sweden along the beach in Falsterbo, where five of his works of art stand. In France, there are sculptures of him in the Bois de Bologne, Château de Cheverny or on the promenade Cagnes-sur -More on the French Riviera or in New Jersey in the USA. The fine composition Dusk that we have in the auction is representative of his art.

Jan de Bray (de Braij) Mercury and Aglauros

The Greco-Roman mythological stories from antiquity have always been a source of motif for artists, not least the poet Ovid's poem Metamorphoses. Here we have a fine example of the Dutch artist Jan de Bray who took inspiration for his work with Mercury and Aglauros. I appreciate the composition, the muted colours, and it's always extra exciting when works of art from this time are dated – as in this case in 1658!

Jens Juel Johan Tobias Sergel

The great Dane, mainly a portrait painter but also a landscape painter in the 18th century, was Jens Juel. In this portrait, he has captured his Swedish artist colleague, the sculptor Johan Tobias Sergel. The glitter in the silk vest or the period-typical cannon caps is beautifully painted, but above all, I am fascinated by the living gaze.
