The specialist´s choice – Design

Jonatan Jahn chooses three highlights from the auction

For newcomers amongst auctions, who aims to build a collection of contemporary art & photographs, is there any specific works they shall keep an eye on?
I tend to say contemporary designers, since the price range is rather low and the pieces are unique or limited to only a few editions. Personally, I prefer having something that isn’t commonplace. The bare thought of having purchased a classic-to-be is thrilling.

As for pieces in this auction I would say to bid in on Folkform’s table lamp “Suburban Skyline”, inspired by the suburbs outside Stockholm. For her 70th and 75th birthday, Queen Silvia of Sweden received two different versions of Folkform’s lamp as a gift from the Swedish Parliament.

The pieces in this auction are studio produced by Folkform and the Suburban Skyline Pendant and Floor are now produced by Örsjö Belysning.
Another one is the ceiling lamp, ”ABC-Jubilee”, Kristoffer Sundin, Simon Klenell & 1:2:3., a unique piece to mark its tenth anniversary. The lamp was sprung out of the project 'Bio Rio’ which opened in 2009.

What piece should the more established collector go for?
This spring’s auction contains a true Swedish design icon, Jonas Bohlin's milestone, the ”Concrete” chair. This particular piece, 1138766 is allegedly the one that Bohlin showcased at Konstfack in 1981. It is rare to be able to present a design object of this historical magnitude in Sweden.

What can we expect from the Contemporary Art & Design viewing at Bukowskis?
A colourful feast, offering the best among art and design in Sweden.

Jonatan Jahns three highlights:

Ettore Sottsass, "Park Lane" Memphis
Ettore Sottsass was the co founder of the Memphis group and one of the most important architects behind the breakthrough of Postmodernism. The ”Park Lane” table truly emblematizes what the Memphis group manifested. The humoristic approch to scale and materials with the plastic shell contrasting the luxurious Italian marble and the playful and oversized feet with its sparkling finish. The Memphis group's design changed the perception of what good design is. In my opinion one of the hottest coffee tables of all time.

Jonas Bohlin "Concrete"
This iconic object is known for symbolizing the breakthrough of Postmodernism within the Swedish design movement. Jonas Bohlin's milestone, the ”Concrete” chair, is a true Swedish design icon. This particular piece is reportedly the one that Bohlin showcased at his graduation exhibition at Konstfack in Stockholm 1981. It is rare opportunity to be able to acquire such an important Swedish design classic, so seize the moment!

Folkform "Suburban Skyline"
Anna Holmquist’s and Chandra Ahlsell’s Folkform has emerged as one of the most interessting Swedish design studios. The "Suburban Skyline" lamp is already a design classic of our time, inspired by the suburbs of Stockholm. The pendant and floor versions were given by the Swedish Parlament as a gift to her majesty the queen on her 70th and 75th birthdays and are today represented at the Royal Palace in Stockholm. The pendant and floor versions are in serial production by Örsjö Belysning. This object is produced by Folkform in a small scale studio edition. This rare gem works just as well as a sculpture and as a lamp.
