Highlights from the leading Nordic auction for contemporary art and design
After a successful autumn, Bukowskis opened the spring Fine Art season with a spectacular line-up of international art at the live auction Contemporary Art & Design.
The auction presented world-class art by top international names including Alex Katz, David Hockney, Francesco Clemente, Yves Klein, Andy Warhol and Mamma Andersson, and achieved high final prices for Swedish artists such as Karin Broos, Rolf Hanson and Ola Billgren.
World-class contemporary art
The art department presented an impressive lineup of international art by some of the worlds most renowned contemporary artists. The painting "Cane Garden Bay 2" by Alex Katz, depicting the artist's wife Ada, painted in 1974, was one of the auctions top lots, it sold for a final price of 7 million. SEK.
Other highlights included the early oil painting "Flowers for a Wedding" by the British artist David Hockney, final price 2.6 million SEK, "Untitled Blue Monochrome (IKB 327)" by Yves Klein, final price of 2.4 million SEK and "The Four Elements" by Francesco Clemente, final price 1.3 million SEK.
Other notable artists included Sheila Hicks, Tony Cragg, Donald Baechler, Tony Matelli, and Jim Dine.
Swedish highlights
Within the Swedish section, Mamma Andersson was represented with several works, among them "All They Had To Do Was Dream" from 2001, which sold at a final price of 1.6 million. SEK. The Swedish section also offered works by artists such as Karin Broos, Rolf Hanson, Martin Wickström, Dick Bengtsson, Torsten Andersson and Ola Billgren.
Prints from Warhol and Hockney
Highlights from the print department included Andy Warhol's motifs "Marilyn Monroe (Marilyn), final price 1.4 million SEK, and "Venus", final price 1.6 million SEK. Keith Haring's print "Totem", a woodcut from 1989, was another highlight which sold for a final price of SEK 775,000 after lively bidding.
Iconic photography
From the photography department, we saw works by international photographers such as Terry O'Neill, Diane Arbus, Albert Watson, David Hockney and Anton Corbijn as well as well-established Swedish names including Christer Strömholm, Nathalia Edenmont and Maria Miesenberger.
Highlights included Elisabeth Ohlsson's photograph “The Last Supper” from 1988, which sold several times its estimate for a final price of 299,000 SEK, which is a new auction record for the artist. Terry O'Neill's iconic motif "Faye Dunaway, Hollywood 1977" also achieved a high final price and was sold for 572,000 SEK.
