When Patek Philippe introduced the Aquanaut in the late 1990s, it turned heads by boldly departing from the brand’s more traditional offerings. Among the earliest references of this series is the 5065, which notably stands out for having an upsized 38 mm case, earning it the nickname “Jumbo”, as opposed to the 35,6 mm of the 5060 and the quartz-powered 5064. It also saw the introduction of a sapphire display back (shared by the 5066). 5065 was the last Aquanaut to feature the original Tropical strap design before Patek Philippe shifted to a more integrated look in subsequent models, such as the 5165 and 5167. As such, this reference occupies a special place in Aquanaut history, bridging the aesthetics of the first generation with the modern direction the line would embrace.
The present example, consigned by its original owner and dating from 2006, represents a late production model of the 5065. By this period, Patek Philippe had already transitioned from tritium to Superluminova on the dial and hands, making it a superb choice for enthusiasts seeking Aquanaut’s classic styling without the aging lume. Housed in stainless steel and powered by the self-winding caliber 315 SC, it combines robust reliability with refined finishing, including the 21K yellow gold rotor displayed through its sapphire caseback.
Offered with its original box, certificate (dated 11 July 2006), and the purchase receipt from Aseman Kello at Helsinki Vantaa Airport, this watch boasts the rare “full set” provenance that serious collectors highly value. Whether worn as a sporty daily companion or cherished as an iconic piece of modern Patek Philippe history, the 5065 Jumbo Aquanaut offers a compelling blend of heritage, functionality, and lasting appeal.
