Highlights from the art department at Modern Art & Design
Tove Jansson, Erik Olson, Otto G Carlsund and GAN in focus when the art was auctioned at Modern Art & Design
After successful auctions for contemporary art and design, Bukowskis continues the live season with Modern Art & Design – the Nordic region's largest auction for modern art and design.
The second day of the auction featured 12 lots exceeding one million SEK and groundbreaking works by Swedish modernists such as Otto G Carlsund, Nils von Dardel, Erik Olson, Lennart Rohde, and Gösta Adrian-Nilsson. Tove Jansson exceeded expectations with the auction's most expensive lot. Additional international highlights included Victor Vasarely, Henry Moore, and Tony Cragg.
High final prices for Swedish Modernists
Highlights in the art section included modernist Otto G Carlsund's painting "Tonens Vibration," an elegant composition from 1929 that sold for a final price of 2 million SEK. Among the top listings were also Nils von Dardel's theatrical painting "Trappan," which has been exhibited at prominent shows both in Sweden and internationally, as well as significant works by the Halmstad Group, such as "Månsken" by Erik Olson and "Svensk Sjöman" by Gösta Adrian-Nilsson (GAN). Additionally, "Snurran" and "Drakar III" by Lennart Rohde, "Brinnande Jord" by Elsa Thoresen, and "Duvmatare" by Ragnar Sandberg achieved million listings.
Lotte Laserstein was represented with several works, among which the main pieces were the painting "Vilande Traute" and a self-portrait that, after lively bidding in the room, sold for a final price of 676 000 SEK. Other highlights from the Swedish section included works by Gösta Nystroem, Inge Schiöler, Olle Olsson-Hagalund, Malin Gyllenstierna, and Yrjö Edelman.
Tove Jansson – The Auction's Top Lot
We saw continued strong demand for art by female modernists. Tove Jansson's painting "Vila" became the auction's most expensive work, exceeding expectations when it sold for over four times its estimate, achieving a final price of 3.5 million SEK.
Additional top listings were achieved for Henry Moore's sculpture "Maquette for Reclining Figure: Pointed Head" and Asger Jorn's painting "Myg." Among the international works, there were pieces by Victor Vasarely, Marcel Duchamp, Bram Bogart, Lynn Chadwick, Salvador Dali, and others.
A Contemporary Collection
As part of the spring Modern auction, a collection of contemporary art from a private collector was presented. Highlights included Tony Cragg's sculpture "Hollow Column," which, after lively bidding, sold for a final price of 1.4 million SEK. Other exciting works in the collection included "Untitled (Modules)" by Sirous Namazi, "Knäveck" by Charlotte Gyllenhammar, and "Kleiner Man" by Stephan Balkenhol.
The print section offered an exciting selection of graphic works by international greats such as Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, and Henri Matisse.
