Design Sale Helsinki, Finland's foremost auction for modern design, saw lively bidding and high final prices for internationally sought-after designers and unique design objects.
The auction demonstrated continued strong interest in Finnish design, with one standout highlight being a magnificent wall relief by Birger Kaipiainen. The relief, a special commission created in 1969 in his studio at Arabia, sold for over double the estimate, reaching a final price of nearly 67,000 EUR, setting a new record for a Kaipiainen relief. Other ceramic highlights included a pitcher and several decorative dishes by Kaipiainen, a relief by Rut Bryk, and the vase "Vase aux Chèvres" by Pablo Picasso, all fetching high final prices.
Internationally sought-after designers such as Paavo Tynell, Märta Blomstedt, Lisa Johansson-Pape, and Alvar Aalto were all represented in the auction. From Tynell, brass table lamps achieved final prices well above their estimates, and from Aalto, a number of armchairs, side tables, and unique glass vases were featured. In the glass section, we also saw high final prices for "Paadar's Ice" by Tapio Wirkkala.
