We have spoken with Eva Seeman, Chief Specialist Modern and Contemporary Decorative art and design, who talks about the selection at this spring's Modern Art + Design. She also takes the opportunity to list some of her favourite objects among the substantial selection of Swedish and international design at this season's auction.
What can we look forward to in this spring's Modern Art + Design auction?
– This spring’s Modern Art + Design auction includes highlights from several categories within the design department. The glass department includes a magnificent piece by Ellen Meyer and a beautiful “palace glass” by Simon Gate. The ceramics department is full of well-known potters such as Kåge, Friberg, Lindberg, and Stålhane, as well as monumental sculptures by Hans Hedberg. The department of furniture and works of art displays, in addition to attractive furniture by Josef Frank, other great representatives from the grand designers of the early 1900s such as Bergsten, Hjorth, and Malmsten. The department also includes a small collection of Carl-Axel Acking's own furniture.
In addition, we have separate departments with parts from the versatile academic Rolf Walters' collection, a department with Otto Schulz's design for Boet, and last but not least, the large collection of luminaires from Hans-Agne Jakobsson's early production. Modern Art + Design also presents a large and rich section of designer jewellery where names such as Torun Bülow Hübe, Ibe Dahlquist, Kristian Nilsson and others are represented.

Ellen Meyer Vase, Reimyre, 1914
Ellen Meyer was for a long time relatively unknown as a designer at Reijmyre. Meyer was hired by Reijmyre ahead of the 1914 Baltic Exhibition and delivered patterns for different designs between 1913–1915. Only a few of her signed pieces have surfaced the market. This vase is quite an impressive cameo glass vase that has until now remained in the same family.

Stig Lindberg Vase, Gustavsbergs studio
Quite a few of us have different favourites among the varied catalogue of Stig Lindberg's production. If I have to pick one I find the stoneware pieces with a scratched decoration very appealing. This is a fine, blue-glazed vase with some kind of richly decorated story-telling motif which contains both animals and architecture.

Josef Frank Cabinet, Firma Svenskt Tenn
After reaching world record prices during Bukowski's previous auctions with the two cabinets 'Apskåpet' (The monkey cabinet) (sold for 4 625 000 SEK) and "Plan de Paris à vol d'oiseau” (sold for 3 613 750 SEK) we are delighted to include another unusual cabinet by Josef Frank in the upcoming auction. This Swedish Modern cabinet was ordered by Countess Elsa von Rosen and has an exquisite appearance as it is covered with a chintz fabric richly decorated with flower baskets.
Countess Elsa von Rosen's cabinet is probably a special commission of cabinet model no 522. The cabinet was designed in 1934-1935 and is of a considerably smaller size. We are happy to be a tiny part of spreading the heritage of both Josef Frank and Svenskt Tenn to a wider audience internationally.

Carl Malmsten Console table
Modern Art + Design presents a large variety of Carl Malmsten's designs. Among Malmsten’s early Swedish Graces pieces, one can find this beautifully painted console table designed in 1926. The sideboard was originally part of a set of Malmsten furniture ordered by the Swedish sculptor Carl Milles for his residence in the USA.

Vivianna Torun Bülow-Hübe Collier an a pair of earrings
Finally, a very special set of jewellery by Vivanna Torun Bülow Hübe. This rare set comprising earrings and a choker necklace has been worn by the Swedish singer and jazz icon Alice Babs. It really shows that Torun constantly was developing and testing new ideas regarding the design of her jewellery. It is made of leather cords, black glass beads and tiny silver pendants.
