The specialist's choice – Camilla Behrer shares her favourites from the upcoming sale

Specialists choice Camilla Behrer

We have spoken with Camilla Behrer, Head of Design / Head of Modern Decorative Art and Design, who talks about the selection at this autumn’s Modern Art + Design. She also takes the opportunity to list some of her favourite objects among the substantial amount of international and Swedish designs at this auction.

What can we look forward to in this autumn’s Modern Art + Design auction?

– After last year's success, the design department is pleased to present, once again, one of the largest modern auctions ever, with several unique pieces of the utmost dignity, as well as an unusually rich and varied selection of glass, silver, ceramics, furniture, and design.

– Of particular interest, I also want to highlight a fantastic range of vintage items from Svenskt Tenn, including rare pewter items from the collection of Hildur Hansson and the magnificent "Apskåpet” (The Monkey Cabinet) by Josef Frank. Also worth mentioning is an interesting, curated collection of Swedish Modern light fixtures from Arvid Böhlmarks Lampfabrik.

Feel free to look through our web catalogue and do not hesitate to stop by for a viewing. You can also email or call me, and we will find a time that suits you. Welcome!

Josef Frank, ”Apskåpet”, Firma Svenskt Tenn ca 1941

This excellent cabinet covered with hand-coloured engravings of monkeys from Buffon's Histoire Naturelle was designed by Josef Frank for Svenskt Tenn circa 1941. It is probably a special commission made for the current owner's parents. The cabinet is unique, partly because of the motif of monkeys and partly because each print is framed by oak moulding. It is a framework of 40 different prints.

Nils Fougstedt, & Anna Petrus, a floor lamp, Firma Svenskt Tenn, Stockholm ca 1929

This fascinating floor lamp was reportedly purchased at the 1930 Stockholm Exhibition and has been in the same family ever since. Nils Fougstedt designed the lamp in pewter and blackened wood around 1929, and on the foot, you´ll see a lion in pewter, designed by Anna Petrus. As far as I know, the model has never been sold at auction before and is most certainly extremely rare.

Stig Lindberg, ”Vase, Gustavsbergs studio 1952”

A generous stoneware vase from the early 1950s, one of the rarities in Stig Lindberg's production. The design with the geometric decoration is extremely unusual and distinguishes itself from the more common pressed check designs that he came to implement in the late 1950s and 1960s.

Georg Jensen, ”Coasters, a pair, Copenhagen ca 1915-1919, 830/1000 silver”

The silver section is, this time, unusually rich with beautiful items from Firma Georg Jensen. These fantastic coasters were designed by Georg Jensen in 1918 and are particularly sought after as they were made during the same period. The grape clusters are a frequently used motif in Jensen's designs, and in this version, they become exquisite ornaments on the dinner table!

To ”Coasters, a pair, Copenhagen ca 1915-1919, 830/1000 silver”

Oiva Toikka, Vas, ”Pom Pom”

A real explosion of colour in free-blown glass with appliqués by Finnish designer Oiva Toikka in a playful late 1960s pop-culture style. One of the most significant "Pom Pom" vases we've ever sold, and I find this colour combination particularly appealing.
