The specialist's choice – Christopher Stålhandske lists carpet favourites

Specialists choice Christopher Stålhandske

We have spoken with Christopher Stålhandske, Head Specialist Carpets, textiles and Islamic works of art, who talks about the selection at this autumn's Modern Art + Design. He also takes the opportunity to list some of his favourite objects among the substantial amount high-quality carpets at this fall's auction.

What can we look forward to in this autumn's Modern Art & Design auction?

– We are very proud of our large department with selected carpets and textiles. In recent years, Swedish carpets have become an increasingly global phenomenon! We have carpets in many different sizes by Märta Måås-Fjetterström, Barbro Nilsson, Ingrid Dessau and Judith Johansson and many other artists.

Feel free to look through our web catalogue and do not hesitate to stop by for a viewing. You can also email or call me, and we will find a time that suits you. Welcome!

When is the viewing and auction?
Viewing: 10–15 November, Berzelii Park 1, Stockholm.
Open: Mon–Fri 11 AM – 6 PM, Sat–Sun, 11 AM – 4 PM.
Auction: 16–17 November, Arsenalsgatan 2, Stockholm.

Marianne Richter ”Brokiga fåglar”.

”Brokiga fåglar” have been made several times but often as smaller textiles, so a drape of this size is very rare.

Ingrid Dessau, ”Blå rutor”

Ingrid Dessau has sometimes had to take a back seat in favour of some of her contemporary textile artists, despite a tremendous artistic skill and an innovative perspective that can be seen in "Blå rutor". The pattern directly invites reflection and conversation about the carpet's shapes and patterns.

Judith Johansson, ”Skogsbryn”

This almost unique carpet has a wide border of pine trees that often appear in carpets by Judith Johansson, for example, in "Björkhult" from 1964. The visually placed poles immediately make the title completely logical and create a recognition in the eyes of the beholder
