A 100 years have passed since Sweden’s most celebrated artists died in his cabin at Blindgatan in Falun, though his versatile art continues to inspire us yet today. To pay attention to this, Bukowskis is proud to present several art works by Carl Larsson at the major hammer auction Important Spring Sale on 4-5 June. For instance “Sommar i Sundborn” / “Flicka i trädgård” (Summer In Sundborn” / “Girl in garden”.
Bukowskis has a lengthy tradition of successful sales of important works by Carl Larsson. The “Alma” pastel from 1887 was, for example, sold as part of an auction entitled “Engineer Carl Robert Lamm of Näsby’s remarkably valuable collection” as long ago as 1920. This memorial year of 2019 is no exception. A significant work, known as “Summer in Sundborn” / “Girl in a garden”, and dating from 1913, has already been submitted for this year’s Important Spring Sale (auction #617). The watercolour, which has, for the past couple of decades, been held as part of a private French collection in Paris, is a delightful depiction of summer in Sundborn.
“The painting can truly be said to depict the Swedish summer in its full glory,” says Bukowskis Art Specialist Pedro Westerdahl. He continues, “The subject of the painting is the artist’s daughter, Lisbeth, home on holiday from her job in England, sitting in the courtyard behind Lilla Hyttnäs. Her green dress and the red Windsor stool provide colouristic focal points, or accents, echoed in the foreground’s hypersensual, gorgeous garden flowers, which include poppies, peonies, and buttercups. In the background, we see the familiar bridge where the family habitually moored their rowing boat, and beyond that, the River Sundborn with Bullerholmen on one bank and fields on the other. The painting is an authentic expression of the kind of everyday poetry that Carl Larsson captured so brilliantly on paper or canvas and which is still, to this day, beloved throughout the world.”
If you don’t happen to be in the vicinity of the Carl Larsson museum in Sundborn or the Anders Zorn museum in Mora, you can still visit Bukowskis’ Important Spring Sale viewing (from 29 May-3 June 2019 at Berzelii Park 1) where “Summer in Sundborn” / “Girl in a garden” will be a natural focal point. For all lovers of Carl Larsson’s art there is, therefore, a great deal to look forward to in this memorial year of 2019.
