Bronze sculptures by Pekka Pitkänen exemplify an idiom with a vividly archaic tone that nevertheless relates strongly to the present time. The abstract character and apparent simplicity of these works incorporate ambiguity and drama, with names that provide an important reference for interpretation, sometimes as beacons and sometimes as masks. The unpolished surfaces of these sculptures may also encourage us to read them as visual essays.
