Artist

Olle Ängkvist (1922-2006) was a Swedish painter known for his innovative techniques and exploration of optical effects in his art. He began his education at Otte Sköld's painting school in 1943, followed by studies at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm from 1943 to 1949. During the summer of 1949, he attended the Boston Museum School Summer Session with Oskar Kokoschka as his main teacher.

In 1961-1963, Ängkvist focused on ceramic decoration at the botanical institution in Frescati, Stockholm. He furthered his artistic career by embellishing the Alby subway station between 1972 and 1974. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, his painting style evolved to feature optically suggestive images. Using harmonious color schemes, he crafted spatial experiences and built up layers through collage techniques, creating landscapes within his paintings. Later in his career, he began incorporating repeated patterns, employing blurred contours to establish dynamic spatiality within his artworks.
