Legenden om Lady Godiva författades någon gång på tidigt 1300-tal. Som gemål till Leofric, Earl av Mercia protesterade Lady Godiva mot makens höga beskattning av invånarna i Coventry. När hon bad maken om att skona invånarna i Coventry från denna skatt menade maken att detta var lika osannolikt som att Godiva själv skulle rida genom stan naken. Godiva red genomstan naken och Leonfic sänkte skatten.
