Åren 1888-89 studerade Österberg på Tekniska skolan(nuvarande Konstfack) och 1895-96 på Axel Tallbergs etsarskola. 1917, då denna teckning utfördes, blev han Vetenskapsakademiens tecknare och var verksam vid Naturhistoriska riksmuseet för vilken han utförde zoologiska teckningar efter uppstoppade djur i deras samlingar. Han har även utfört en etsning med ett lodjur på en klipphäll(Nationalmuseum).
