The scene in the painting depicts Angelique and Medoro. The story of Angelica and Medoro is one of the most significant themes in Ludovico Ariosto's epic Renaissance poem, Orlando Furioso. The scene shows Angelica and Medoro, confirming their marriage by carving their names into a tree.
